One of the things I do in addition to Police work is serve as Worship Leader at First Baptist Church of Paris.
I’ve been on the worship team since 2001, and have been Worship Leader since 2014. I also head up the Church Security Team.
I don’t say this to suggest that I’m all that. Because I know that I’m not. Like everyone, I’ve made my share of mistakes. But what it does mean is I’ve experienced Grace, and I share that with other people.
As a cop, people are usually having a bad day when our paths have to cross. Sometimes we help you out. Sometimes we have to take appropriate law enforcement action.
But we can still do our jobs with courtesy and respect. The last guy I arrested for DUI said “You’re the nicest cop I’ve ever met.” He meant it too.
Taking him off the road helped keep people safer. It kept him safer too, and may cause him to get some help.
Compassion is important to keep from getting jaded. I hope to always be aware of the Grace that’s been given me. You can be tough and fair at the same time.
